Oral Performance Assessment (OPA)

About the OPA

This assessment is designed to measure your ability to communicate in English in an instructional format. The topics are drawn from your field of study and are suggested by your advisor or your DGS. The test demonstrates how well you speak English in the context of presenting information in your academic area to undergraduates. The OPA consists of 2 sections, a 10-minute teaching segment and an office visit. It is presented in a classroom with a whiteboard and is videotaped. At least two raters will rate your performance.

Test Dates

The OPA is held in the Yale Center for Language Study and is offered twice a year, usually in December and May.
